Toronto-based Guru Studio has optioned the TV rights to Eric Hill’s children’s book series Spot, with an animated preschool series now in development.
Children’s author and former Amazon Kids+ exec Sarah Maizes is attached to consult on the project, according to a news release. Her credits include Hello Kitty: Super Style (Amazon Kids+) and Dinosaur Train (PBSKids).
Spot is published by Puffin, part of Penguin Random House Children’s U.K., with the Fun with Spot brand consumer products and licensing handled in-house by Penguin Ventures.
Like the books, the TV series will follow Spot, with children seeing their own everyday experiences reflected in the puppy’s adventures with his family and friends.
Frank Falcone, president and executive creative director of Guru, said “we will inspire that same engaged curiosity, bringing a fresh and contemporary feel, for today’s preschoolers,” in a statement.
The first Spot book was published in 1980 and has since become a best-seller with more than 65 million books sold worldwide. The books have been translated into over 60 languages, including braille and sign language, across more than 20 formats. The book series has seen growth in the U.S., the U.K. and Australia recently, said the release.
“Guru recognises Spot’s unique appeal and this, together with an impressive portfolio and roster of talent, creates an exciting opportunity to bring Spot to new audiences via animation,” said Francesca Dow, managing director at Penguin Random House Children’s U.K.
Guru is currently in production with Moonbug Entertainment on My Magic Pet Morphle and the family miniseries Charlotte’s Web with Sesame Workshop for Max.
