Nathalie Théberge has been appointed as vice-chairperson of the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) for a five-year term.
Minister of Canadian Heritage Pascale St-Onge announced the appointment on Thursday (Feb. 22), with Théberge set to begin her term on April 3.
Théberge comes to the CRTC after having served as vice-chair and CEO of the Copyright Board of Canada, where she also led efforts towards the modernization of the board of directors.
In addition to holding a number of executive positions at the Department of Canadian Heritage, she spearheaded a number of trade negotiations, including the Trans-Pacific Partnership and agreements with South Korea, Japan and the European Union.
Théberge led the development of Canada’s Creative Export Strategy, and the International Network on Cultural Policy. She represented Canada as the national point of contact for UNESCO’s 2005 Convention on the Diversity of Cultural Expressions from 2010 to 2018.
St-Onge said in a statement that “having Nathalie Théberge on the CRTC’s management team will strengthen the organization’s ability to navigate today’s complex digital landscape, while protecting the interests of Canadians and our creative professionals.”
The Minister also thanked Alicia Barin, who stepped down from her role as vice-chairperson, broadcasting earlier this year, “for her service to the CRTC since 2019.”
