POV acquires Twice Colonized for summer 2024 season

The Canada-Greenland-Denmark copro will make its U.S. broadcast debut in the PBS doc strand’s upcoming 37th season this summer.

POV has announced the acquisition of Danish director Lin Alluna’s acclaimed feature documentary Twice Colonized, which will make its U.S. broadcast debut in the PBS doc strand’s upcoming 37th season this summer.

Twice Colonized is a coproduction between Montreal’s EyeSteelFilm, Greenland’s Ánorâk Film and Nunavut-based Red Marrow Media, marking the first coproduction between Inuit filmmakers across colonial borders. The producers are Emile Hertling Péronard, Alethea Arnaquq-Baril, Stacey Aglok MacDonald and Bob Moore.

The CBC commissioned the film, which went on to open the most recent season of its doc strand, The Passionate Eye.

The film profiles Inuit lawyer Aaju Peter (pictured) as she embarks on a personal journey to reclaim her language and identity after a lifetime of whitewashing and forced assimilation, with the goal of bringing her colonizers in both Canada and Denmark to justice.

The doc had its world premiere at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, and was the opening night film of both the 2023 CPH:DOX Film Festival and the 2023 Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival, the first time in history that the same film has opened both events.

The deal was negotiated by Chris White and Erika Dilday for American Documentary/POV, and Salma Abdalla and Jason Resnick for Autlook Filmsales.
