Amazon MGM Studios inks long-term deal with Pinewood Toronto

The multi-year agreement will provide the U.S. company with the exclusive use of five sound stages for its productions.

A mazon MGM Studios has signed a multi-year commitment for the exclusive use of five sound stages at Pinewood Toronto Studios.

The agreement was announced Wednesday (Jan. 17), with Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow and Ontario Premier Doug Ford among those in attendance.

Amazon MGM Studios will lease about 160,000 square feet of space in total, including workshops and office space, to be used exclusively for its productions in Canada.

Both Amazon and MGM have produced a number of titles in Toronto, including The Boys, Reacher, and The Handmaid’s Tale.

Dan Scharf, Amazon MGM Studios’ VP of global business operations, said the deal “offers us immense opportunity for the continued expansion of film and series projects in Toronto, Ontario, and Canada,” in a statement.

“Amazon MGM’s long-term commitment to new studio space in Toronto is a tremendous vote of confidence in our province and our workers,” said Ford. “This investment is going to provide a big boost to our cultural sectors and help to ensure Ontario remains one of the world’s leading jurisdictions for film and television production for years to come.”

Added Chow: “The film and television industry are an important economic driver for our city and this new partnership will ensure Toronto’s world class screen industry continues to thrive. This investment by Amazon MGM Studios will also support our creative sector, resulting in jobs for the numerous professions that are crucial to the success of the local industry.”
