Toronto’s Wattpad Webtoon Studios is teaming up with L.A.-based Imagine Entertainment to develop a feature film adaptation of Love Advice from The Great Duke of Hell, a comic by the Webtoon creator known as unfins.

New York-born filmmaker Cody Blue Snider is attached to write the live-action adaptation, according to a press release. Wattpad Webtoon Studios’ Aron Levitz, David Madden and Lindsey Weems Ramey will produce alongside Imagine’s Karen Lunder and Allan Mandelbaum. Imagine is founded by Oscar-winning producer Brian Grazer and director Ron Howard.

The comic, which has more than 160 million views on Webtoon, is centred on a high school student who offers the “The Great Duke of Hell” his soul in exchange for winning the heart of his love interest.

Lindsey Weems Ramey, head of global film at Wattpad Webtoon Studios, described the comic as as “a truly unique story, with subversive dark humour and a surprisingly sweet romance at its heart.”

Wattpad Webtoon Studios currently has more than 100 projects in development or production, said the release. They include the recently greenlit CBC Gem original Near or Far (Harlow Creative); Hawk with Marvel Cinematic Universe screenwriter Christopher Yost, which is based on the sci-fi Wattpad webnovel of the same name; and animated series adaptation of Rachel Smythe’s Lore Olympus, which has 1.5 billion views on Webtoon.
