TVO reaches agreement with workers to end strike

The agreement marks the end of an 11-week strike for the 74 employees represented by the Canadian Media Guild.

TVO’s unionized workers have reached an agreement with TVO Media Education Group, bringing an end to the 11-week strike that began on Aug. 21.

The Ontario public broadcaster announced Sunday (Nov. 5) that its unionized workers under the Canadian Media Guild had accepted its latest offer in negotiations for a new collective agreement. The labour action, which had seen 74 producers, journalists and education workers walking the picket line, will come to an end as of Monday (Nov. 6).

The deal offers an approximate 7.5% increase in compensation over three years, with 5.75% to go into effect immediately due to the fact that the increase is retroactive from when the previous agreement expired on Oct. 28, 2022. The remaining 1.75% increase will be applied in the final year of the agreement.

Additional details from TVO’s previous offer were also in the agreement, including the creation of a training program to help CMG employees increase their skill sets, and a concession the previous request to waiver the stipulation that ensures contract workers become permanent after a certain period of time. CMG-TVO branch president Meredith Martin said on X (formerly Twitter) that the agreement also includes voluntary buyouts for members and $500 in training for employees.

CMG has not responded to a request for comment as of press time.

“Today’s vote comes as welcome news,” said TVO CEO Jeffrey L. Orridge in a statement. “Everyone at TVO is looking forward to having our team at full strength once again and focusing our efforts on delivering the important educational content and current affairs journalism TVO is known for.”
