Canadian producer David Gross (Room, Goon) has lined up his next feature, the high school horror film Whistle.
Production is slated to begin on the Canada-Ireland coproduction in Ontario in early November, with U.K. genre director Corin Hardy (The Nun; pictured) set to helm the project.
Whistle is written by Owen Egerton, adapting his own short story. Gross is producing the film under his Toronto and L.A. prodco No Trace Camping alongside Macdara Kelleher (Evil Dead Rise) of Dublin-based Wild Atlantic Pictures. Black Bear Pictures is handling international sales.
The film follows a misfit group of teens who find a cursed ancient Aztec whistle that, when blown, summons their future deaths. It stars Canadian actors Sophie Nélisse (Yellowjackets) and Percy Hynes White (Wednesday), as well as U.K. actors Dafne Keen (His Dark Materials), Sky Yang (Rebel Moon) and Nick Frost (Hot Fuzz).
In a statement, Gross praised Hardy’s “ability to combine strong visual sensibilities with atmosphere and emotion and a propensity for relentless, imaginative set pieces.”
