The Fantasia International Film Festival has selected horror-comedy We Are Zombies from Quebecois film collective RKSS as the closing film of its 27th edition.
We Are Zombies is written and directed by François Simard, Anouk Whissell, and Yoann-Karl Whissell — the trio who make up RKSS (Turbo Kid) — and will make its world premiere at the festival.
Based on the comic Les zombies qui ont mangé le monde (The Zombies that Ate the World), We Are Zombies is set in a society where zombies roam without the urge to eat human flesh, said the release. The film is produced by Montreal’s Christal Films Productions and France’s Full House, with Paris-based Kinology handling international sales. It stars Megan Peta Hill (Riverdale), Alexandre Nachi (1991) and Derek Johns (The Boys).
The restored, 4K versions of Canadian titles East End Hustle by Frank Vitale, and Evil Judgement have also been added to the lineup as world premieres. East End Hustle, co-written by Allan Moyle, has been restored by Canadian International Pictures, and Evil Judgement by U.S.-based film restoration and distribution company Vinegar Syndrome.
Quebec filmmaker Pascal Plante’s Red Rooms, which was previously announced as the opening film of the festival, has been selected for the festival’s Cheval Noir Competition, according to the release. The film recently made its world premiere in competition at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, which runs until Saturday (July 8), and will have its North American premiere at Fantasia.
The International Short Film competition, meanwhile, includes three Canadian titles: Samantha Lai’s Buffering … Please Wait, Joseph Carney’s Metamorphypus, and Zachary Bennett’s T-Bone.
Highlights of the festival include a Cheval Noir Career Achievement Award for actor Nicolas Cage, whose film Sympathy for the Devil is also making a world premiere. Directed by Yuval Adler, the film’s producing team includes Canadian filmmaker Allan Ungar (Bandit) and Toronto’s Alex Lebovici of Hammerstone Studios.
