Stephanie Azam has been let go as head of content at Disney+ Canada, Playback has confirmed.
The role was cut as part of The Walt Disney Company’s previously announced restructure, which saw approximately 7,000 employees let go in a US$5.5 million cost-saving measure.
Playback has learned that Disney+ Canada senior marketing and communications manager Rakhee Sapra was also let go as part of the same restructure.
Azam (pictured) joined the Disney+ Canada team in 2022 with a remit to build Disney’s original Canadian content for the direct-to-consumer platform, reporting to VP and GM Jason Badal. She previously held senior roles at Sphere Films (formerly MK2 | Mile End) and Telefilm Canada.
She took on the role as Bill C-11, which proposes legislation that would bring online streaming platforms under CRTC regulation, was in consideration in the Senate. The bill has since received royal assent, and consultations are currently underway with both the CRTC and Canadian Heritage’s draft policy direction.
To date, Disney+ has yet to greenlight a Canadian original.
Azam’s departure was first reported by Variety.
