A Super Channel original documentary about U.S. comedian and actor Dane Cook has started a multi-city, months-long shoot.
Edmonton-headquartered Score G Production Films has announced the start of production on the feature-length Brace for Impact: The Dane Cook Story, directed and written by Brett Harvey (Breaking Olympia: The Phil Heath Story).
The executive producers include Cook; Score G president Adam Scorgie; Shane Fennessey, who is also with Score G; and Rocky Mudaliar of Edmonton’s Abrupt Films. Also producing are Upstream Flix and Gruvpix Films.
Scorgie tells Playback Daily that the doc will be filmed over six months in Los Angeles, Boston, New York and Cook’s hometown of Arlington, Mass. Editing will take place in Vancouver and Edmonton.
Super Channel commissioned the doc last October, with plans to air it in late 2024.
Scorgie says the doc was triggered by a Super Channel broadcast licence for pay TV in Canada, after which the rest of financing was secured with support from the Canada Media Fund, and federal and provincial tax credits for a budget of just over $1 million. U.S. and international rights are still available as of press time.
The film is a “story of triumph, resilience, and personal growth,” Scorgie wrote in a post on LinkedIn on Thursday (June 22) announcing the start of production.
“Dane’s journey of overcoming the betrayal and embezzlement by his own brother and best friend, which led to the loss of all his money at the time ($15 million) is truly extraordinary,” wrote Scorgie. “What makes this story even more remarkable is that Dane managed to recover from these losses in less than two years and has emerged happier and more successful than ever.”
