NFB names Kate Vollum as producer at Ontario Studio

Vollum has worked with the NFB since 2007 and was a coproducer on the recent documentary Ever Deadly from Tanya Tagaq and Chelsea McMullan.

The National Film Board of Canada (NFB) has appointed Kate Vollum (pictured) as a producer at its Ontario Studio.

The Toronto-based studio’s executive producer Chanda Chevannes, who joined the NFB last year, announced Vollum’s appointment on Tuesday (June 20). She has already started in the new role, said a spokesperson for the NFB.

Vollum was previously an associate producer at the Ontario Studio, according to a news release. She most recently served as a coproducer on the experimental feature-length documentary Ever Deadly from Inuk throat singer and director Tanya Tagaq and co-director Chelsea McMullan. The doc was acquired by Kino Lorber for U.S. distribution earlier this year.

The producer has been with the NFB since 2007, first working at the Mediatheque in Toronto, running workshops on stop-motion and documentaries for school groups. She later became a production coordinator, working on films such as McMullan’s My Prairie Home, Sarah Polley’s Stories We Tell, and Charles Officer’s Unarmed Verses.

Her other works at the Ontario Studio include the Katerina Cizek’s multimedia doc project Highrise, the short doc series Otherly, created for Instagram Stories in partnership with PBS’ POV Spark, and Souvenir, a collection of shorts from Indigenous filmmakers featuring footage from the NFB archives.

“Kate’s vision for her project slate demonstrates her deep commitment to the NFB’s mandate and the Ontario Studio’s priorities,” said Chevannes in a statement. “Her passion for championing filmmakers’ voices and her deeply collaborative approach will benefit both the NFB and the wider documentary community.”
