Mark W. Johnston to head RiverRock Films unscripted team

The Canadian media vet will lead RiverRock Real out of Toronto with plans to make Canadian content.

Los Angeles-based production company RiverRock Films is launching a new unscripted division, RiverRock Real, which will make Canadian content and be led by Toronto-based veteran executive producer, writer and director Mark W. Johnston.

“RiverRock has long anticipated its expansion into the unscripted arena, and the addition of Mark, alongside the launch of the RiverRock Real division, allows us to bring that dream to a reality,” said RiverRock Films CEO Matthew Kavanaugh in a news release announcing the new venture.

Johnston added that RiverRock has a successful track record in feature films, and that RiverRock Real is poised to expand from that foundation with dozens of “innovative long-form projects across the unscripted landscape.”

Johnston (pictured) is a longtime Canadian media veteran who began his career as a national reporter for Global News, and later served as a programming executive for Alliance Atlantis Broadcasting.

He is the founder and former CEO of Toronto- and Vancouver-based factual prodco Fusion Television, and also the founder of the L.A.–headquartered factual entertainment outfit Eelay Media. Most recently, Johnston worked as director of broadcasting at Roar Media Creative Studios.

Morgan Drmaj, an experienced Canadian executive producer, series creator and showrunner across both scripted and unscripted projects, will join Johnston at RiverRock Real but be based in L.A.

Drmaj’s credits include Fearless in the Kitchen for OWN Canada and Let’s Do Lunch for Food Network Canada. He previously served with Johnston as VP of creative for Eelay Media.
