D Films links with Icon

D Films has acquired the exclusive Canadian distribution rights to all titles from Icon U.K. Group, as the boutique distributor continues to beef up its presence in the home market.

The deal, announced Thursday, will see D Films release five to six, and eventually up to eight Icon films per year in Canada. The distributor would not say which titles are included in the agreement for the coming year. Icon’s film and TV library is comprised of 400 titles.

The partnership, which is effective immediately, gives D Films access to Icon’s international sales divisions and direct operating territories, while Icon’s chief executive Stewart Till has also been named to the board of directors of the Toronto distributor. Till took control of the U.K. operations of L.A.-based Icon Group last year and has a first-look deal in place with Bruce Davey and Mel Gibson’s Icon Productions (The Passion of the Christ, Edge of Darkness).

D Films chair Darryl Iwai and Till had previously worked together at Signpost Films and PolyGram Filmed Entertainment.

‘[Icon’s] leadership and high quality content will provide D Films with immediate growth opportunities in the worldwide markets through Icon’s expanding network of international distribution and sales companies,’ commented Iwai in a release.

The deal was negotiated by Iwai and D Films president Jim Sherry, alongside Icon’s Till, Dave Harries and Anthony Buckner.

Since its launch in May last year, D Films has acquired 12 titles including the British biopic Creation, and the upcoming Winnie, starring Jennifer Hudson and Terrence Howard.
