Canadian actor Emmanuel Kabongo has stepped behind the scenes as a first-time feature producer for the film Spiral.
The thriller is co-directed by Charlie Hamilton and Zach Ramelan, and written by Hamilton. It is currently in production in Toronto and is scheduled to wrap on Thursday (April 27), according to a news release.
Spiral stars Kabongo (Outer Banks) and executive producer Mishael Morgan (The Young and the Restless) in a story about an inner-city community leader embroiled in sports, real estate and illegal drug trafficking.
Producing alongside Kabongo are Daniel Govia of Toronto’s Magic Button Films, James Stewart of Geneva Film, and Eric Yensu. Additional executive producers are Sari Colt and Chris Morsby.
The film was privately financed, and the budget was not disclosed. It does not have a distributor or sales agent as of press time.
Rounding out the cast are Lovell Adams-Gray (Power Book II: Ghost), Brittany Raymond (The Next Step), Paul Amos (Murdoch Mysteries), Karl Campbell (The Umbrella Academy) and Tony Ofori (Ghostwriter).
Kabongo, based in Toronto and raised in South Africa, recently picked up several international festival awards for his role on the digital series Chateau Laurier, including the Swedish International Film Festival, in addition to receiving a Canadian Screen Award nomination.
Morgan, a Toronto-raised Trinidadian-Canadian actor, made history in 2022 by becoming the first Black woman to win the Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her work on The Young and the Restless.
