Nelvana teams with Toikido on Piñata Smashlings

The two plan to develop a 2D-animated kids series based on Toikido's gaming IP that launches on Roblox in June.

Corus Entertainment’s Nelvana is taking a swing at adapting immersive gaming property Piñata Smashlings under a new partnership with London-based toyco Toikido.

The companies have teamed up to develop an animated kids series based on Toikido’s Piñata Smashlings, their first in-house IP that launches on Roblox in June, according to a news release. It features hundreds of characters inspired by the party tradition of smashing candy-filled papier-mâché containers

The 52 x 11-minute, 2D-animated series will “expand the amusing Piñataverse world and showcase its characters like they’ve never seen them before,” said Pam Westman, president of Nelvana, in a statement.

Plans are also underway to launch ancillary Piñata Smashlings productions, including toys, plush, apparel, homewares, publishing, magazines and animation, said the release.

A toy range will hit North American retail this fall, featuring more than 100 collectible characters contained in eggs that kids must break open.

Piñata Smashlings is a trademark of Toikido Ltd., which was founded by CEO Darran Garnham in 2020. Its world includes creatures called Smashlings and a playful Piñata “who love to have fun and are always on the lookout for the Rainbow Whale who drops new Rainbow pods,” said the release.
