Elemental Post has opened a new post-production studio that’s billed as one of the only ones of its kind in Vancouver, with colour, sound and finishing services under one roof.
The end-to-end, full-service boutique facility is in Vancouver’s industrial Railtown neighbourhood and has a 4K theatre with laser projection, two sound stages and various suites — three for colour and others for finishing, titling and dailies, according to a news release.
Elemental is headed by post supervisor/sound designer Matt Drake and senior colourist Dave Tomiak, who came up with the idea to launch the studio during the pandemic, said the release.
The team of seven, which works with filmmakers internationally and has a creative-first mandate, “will likely grow with demand” with post-production freelancers.
Drake said in a statement that he and Tomiak have “worked as freelancers for many years and wanted to come together to create something unique.”
The duo’s recent work includes Vancouver-based Anthony Shim’s award-winning drama Riceboy Sleeps, now in theatres, and Asia Youngman and Kathleen Jayme’s documentary I’m Just Here for The Riot, which will make its world premiere at Hot Docs.
The team also worked on Marie Clements’ Bones of Crows, doing the colour on both the film and miniseries, which will air on CBC later this year. They’re currently working on Hollywood features, including Borderline, the directorial debut of Cocaine Bear writer Jimmy Warden.
“It’s important for us to form and maintain strong relationships with filmmakers, which is why we are dedicated to a creative-driven business,” said Drake. “Although what we do is considered by most as largely technical, the creative aspect of what we do is a big part of the overall vision and contributes to what audiences see on screen.”
Tomiak said the facility “gives filmmakers the opportunity to feel at home here through the final stages of post-production.”
“So much love and care goes into making these projects and we want filmmakers to be able to explore creative ideas and work through the process of both sound and colour in a seamless way,” Tomiak added. “Ultimately we are film lovers, so the care we put into our work and our relationships is a big part of our offering at Elemental.”
