Cineflix Productions is in development on a new scripted comedy series with Alberta-raised comedian Bonnie McFarlane.
McFarlane (pictured) serves as the creator and writer for You’re Better Than Me, according to a news release from the Toronto- and New York–based prodco.
The half-hour series is inspired by McFarlane’s 2016 memoir of the same name, which was published by HarperCollins and details her days growing up on a farm “with a cow for a best friend” in Cold Lake, Alta., in the mid-1980s. The book has a foreword by Anthony Bourdain.
McFarlane has headlined various comedy shows as well as HBO and Comedy Central specials, and is known for starring on NBC’s Last Comic Standing and appearances on various late-night talk shows.
She also directed the documentary Women Aren’t Funny and co-hosts a radio show on Sirius XM with her comedian-husband Rich Vos based on their podcast My Wife Hates Me.
In a statement, McFarlane called the series with Cineflix “a testament to the first person that believed in it.”
“If not for Anthony Bourdain, I would have never forced myself to write about my past. What a joy it’s been working with the amazing team at Cineflix, revisiting the most embarrassing period of my life!” she added.
Lisa Baylin, director of development at Cineflix Productions, said they “fell in love with Bonnie through her hilarious memoir,” adding that “her voice is so clear and relatable to audiences.”
Jeff Vanderwal, VP, scripted, Cineflix Productions, noted the series is “set in the world of pre-cell phone, pre-internet, 1980s small-town Canada, but the themes of acceptance, friendship, and family are universal, and will appeal to a wide audience.”
McFarlane is represented by Cris Italia at The Stand Group and Bradley Garrett at Cohen Gardner Law.
Cineflix’s development slate also includes a recently announced scripted series based on singer Gladys Knight‘s life, as well as the four-part documentary anthology The Descendants, a crime series based on Vancouver-born author Sam Wiebe’s Wakeland novels, and the docuseries Surviving Hollywood with Anthony Rapp.
