Waterside Studios developing Geek Girl series for Netflix, Corus

The producers of the book series adaptation are RubyRock Pictures and Aircraft Pictures, with Corus' Waterside Studios as the studio, in collaboration with Nelvana.

Corus Entertainment’s new scripted content venture Waterside Studios is developing British author Holly Smale’s teen Geek Girl book series, which will premiere globally on Netflix and in Canada on Corus’ broadcast platforms.

U.K. prodco RubyRock Pictures and Toronto-based Aircraft Pictures will produce the series adaptation. Waterside Studios is the studio for the project, in collaboration with Corus’ Nelvana, according to a news release issued Friday (Jan. 20).

HarperCollins is the publisher of the Geek Girl novels, which have been translated into more than 30 languages.

The premise of the books is described as “awkward, neurodivergent teenager Harriet Manners, whose life is turned upside down when she is spotted to be a model and embarks on a life-affirming journey of self-discovery as she balances high school and high fashion.”

The series is expected to have 10 x 30-minutes episodes.

Corus launched Toronto-based Waterside Studios as an IP and production venture with TV executive Jeff Norton last September, with a focus on bringing premium scripted Canadian content for youth and primetime audiences to the Canadian and international marketplace.

Waterside Studios collaborates with independent producers and is working closely with Nelvana on its live-action kids content development slate.
