Toronto-based Motel Pictures is diving into the city’s indie music scene of the 1990s and early 2000s with We Forgot to Break Up.
The queer indie music feature has started production in North Bay, Ont., with Karen Knox (pictured) as director, according to a news release. Noel Baker, Zoe Whittall and Pat Mills adapted the story from the novel Heidegger Stairwell by Canadian writer Kayt Burgess.
Based on the Chandler Levack-directed short film of the same name, which had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2017, We Forgot to Break Up is produced by Nicole Hilliard-Forde (The Other Half) with financing from Telefilm Canada, Ontario Creates, the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation, and Urban Post.
Executive producers include Justin Kelly, Mark Gingras and John Laing, with Ben Farella attached as an associate producer. The film’s budget was not disclosed.
Jordan Kennington (The Swearing Jar) has been tapped as the cinematographer on the film, which will feature original music by several artists, including Torquil Campbell from Montreal band Stars, as well as a soundtrack of early 2000s popular indie music.
Lane Webber (Slo Pitch), Daniel Gravelle (Hell of A Summer), June Laporte (The Dropout), Jordan Dawson (The Expanse) and Hallea Jones (Locke & Key) star in the story of a queer love triangle and a small-town band that finds success in the big city.
This is the sophomore feature film from Knox, showrunner of IFC/AMC’s Slo Pitch, following Adult Adoption.
Motel Pictures’ Hilliard-Forde said in a statement that Knox’s “perspective and keen observations of human beings, mixed with her aesthetic prowess, make her a perfect fit” for the project.
Knox is repped by MaryJane MacCallum of The ARC Agency.
On the cast side: Laporte is repped by Kim Edwards of The Characters Talent Agency and Jared Schwartz of Industry Entertainment; Webber is repped by Mia Bezener of Riverlight Talent Management; both Gravelle and Dawson are repped by Nick Saites of Oscars Abrams Zimel & Associates; and Jones is repped by Larissa Giroux of Oscars Abrams Zimel & Associates, and Marion Campbell Kammer of Buchwald.
