Doctor Who heads to Disney+ Canada in BBC deal

The streamer will be the exclusive home to new episodes of the British franchise, while Bell Media will retain rights to previously-aired episodes, Playback has confirmed.

The TARDIS will soon land at a new Canadian home as popular sci-fi series Doctor Who heads to Disney+.

BBC and Disney Branded Television have partnered to make streaming service Disney+ the exclusive home for new episodes of the long-running British franchise outside of the U.K. and Ireland.

The deal means that the Doctor’s current home in Canada, CTV Sci-Fi Channel (formerly Space), will no longer air new episodes of the series, a spokesperson for Bell Media confirmed to Playback Daily. Bell Media will, however, continue to retain rights to the series catalogue, including the first 13 seasons of the current series, which are currently available on Crave.

Doctor Who has served as one of CTV Sci-Fi Channel’s top properties, and was the channel’s most-watched series when its sixth season aired back in 2011.

New episodes of the series won’t run until November 2023, according to a release from BBC, starting with three special episodes to celebrate the franchise’s 60th anniversary, starring former Doctor Who lead David Tennant. The episodes will precede the introduction of the next iteration of the Doctor, portrayed by Sex Education actor Ncuti Gatwa (pictured).

Doctor Who is produced by Wales prodco Bad Wolf with BBC Studios Production. Russell T Davies, who led the series’ revival in 2005, returns as showrunner in 2023.
