Former Telefilm and Sphere Films executive Stephanie Azam has joined Disney+ Canada as director of content.
Azam made the announcement on LinkedIn on Thursday (Aug. 18), just over a month after Disney+ Canada appointed Toronto-based Justin Erdman as its new head of partnerships.
Her remit includes helping grow Disney’s direct-to-consumer content in Canada and strategically leading a team responsible for the content planning, acquisitions, and commissioning activities for Disney+ Canada, according to the job description for the position posted in April.
Other responsibilities include partnering with internal stakeholders in the U.S. and globally in setting the content acquisition and production strategy associated with Disney+, including assessing the Canadian market. The role will report to the VP and GM of Disney+ Canada, Jason Badal, and work with the Canadian Disney direct-to-consumer leadership team to set the team’s agenda and overall strategy in the market.
The Toronto-based Azam joins the streamer after serving as VP of development and acquisitions at Montreal-based distributor Sphere Films (formerly MK2 | Mile End), where she started working last September. Prior to that, she was with Telefilm Canada for 13 years, where she served as national director of feature film for the English-language market after being marketing and distribution specialist. The Ottawa native left the organization in March 2021.
Azam has also worked for New York-based distributor Zeitgeist Films.
The Walt Disney Company streamer launched in Canada in November 2019.
