Trailer Park Boys snag box office prize

Comedy sequel The Trailer Park Boys: Countdown to Liquor Day will receive Telefilm Canada’s inaugural Golden Box Office award as the top performer at the English Canadian box office last year.

The award comes with a $40,000 cash prize and will be presented Friday in Halifax by Telefilm execs Carolle Brabant, Stephanie Azam and Gord Whittaker to the film’s creative team including director Mike Clattenburg.

Countdown to Liquor Day generated $2.9 million on 200 screens last fall and follow Ricky, Julian and Bubbles — played by Robb Wells, John Paul Tremblay and Mike Smith — as they vow to clean up their act upon their release from jail, though trouble ensues when they encounter a changed man in trailer park supervisor Jim Lahey (John Dunsworth).

The first film — based on the popular TV series that aired for seven seasons on Showcase – was also a commercial hit in 2006. Both are distributed by Alliance Films.

The newly created Telefilm award for the English market differs from the Golden Reel (handed out at the Genies) in that it’s presented to the scriptwriters and director of the highest-grossing film, and not the producers. The French-language equivalent is the Guichet d’or – already in existence for three years — which this year went to De père en flic. The cop comedy earned $10.5 million at the Quebec box office.

The Trailer Park Boys are currently working on the new six-episode Showcase sitcom The Drunk and on Drugs Happy Funtime Hour.
