McWaters closed for holidays: back in ayear

Promising that she’ll be back in 1995, Rosanne McWaters has announced a one-year closing of Toronto-based McWaters Film Company International.

McWaters, who has been a colorful member of the Toronto commercial production community for many years, maintains the closure is to allow for a sabbatical, not because the shop is going out of business.

‘This is no bankruptcy,’ she says, indicating all her financial affairs are in order and that she and executive producer Andre Cilliers simply want a year away from the business to travel, spend time with family members in Canada, South Africa and Europe, and to spend a few months vacationing at their Muskoka, Ont. cottage.

McWaters, who says her business lease expires at the end of this month, says she’s just straightening out a few work-related odds and ends before beginning the sabbatical.

She is ‘searching for homes’ for her Canadian directors, Peter Thomson and Stephen Onyett. ‘That’s a sad process,’ she says. ‘Especially (in the case of) guys I’ve worked on promoting.’

Her plans are more or less mapped out until October of this year, at which time she says she and her family will likely return to Canada to begin planning the company’s 1995 relaunch.
