Two killed in CTV copter crash

Coverage of a disaster turned to disaster on Wednesday, when CTV cameraman Hugh Haugland and his pilot were killed in a helicopter crash in rural Quebec.

The pair were in the area covering the aftermath of a tornado that went through the region on Tuesday night. The chopper went down the following morning about 240 kilometers northwest of Montreal, killing both men, according to CTV News.

Haugland, 44, was the son of CTV anchorman Bill Haugland who retired in 2006. His pilot, local businessman and veteran aviator Roger Belanger, was in his 60s.

Reports indicate the helicopter may have had mechanical trouble prior to its crash near Highway 117 in the Laurentian Mountains, after which it burst into flames.

In a statement, network CEO Ivan Fecan offered sympathies to the families of both men. ‘Hugh has been part of the CTV family for many years. Our heartfelt sympathies go out to Hugh’s family, loved ones, friends and colleagues at CTV Montreal,’ said Fecan.

A probe has reportedly been launched to determine the cause of the crash.
