Maxime Giroux’s French-language drama Norbourg led Canadian films at the box office for the third week running, while Jonathan Keijser’s Peace by Chocolate earned the highest average per theatre in its debut.

Norbourg (pictured) earned $63,715 in Canadian theatres during the week of May 6 to 12, bringing its total Canadian box office amount to just under $535,000 since its debut on April 22.

Produced by Réal Chabot of Films du Boulevard and distributed by Entract Films, Norbourg is based on a real-life financial scandal in Quebec where the titular trust fund company scammed approximately $130 million from investors. It is directed by Giroux and written by Simon Lavoie.

Peace by Chocolate was the second-highest grossing Canadian film at the box office for the week, netting $55,893 in its opening week. However, it earned the highest average gross per theatre at $1,471, compared to Norbourg‘s $1,180 per-theatre average.

The film, directed by Keijser and co-written by him and Abdul Malik, follows a family of Syrian refugees who relocate to a small town in Nova Scotia after their chocolate factory in Syria is bombed. It is produced by Keijser, Martin Paul-Hus, Catherine Légar, and Kathy Wolf, and distributed by Vortex Media.

Rounding out the top five grossing Canadian films of the week are Geneviève Albert’s Noémie dit oui (produced by Leitmotiv Films; distributed by K Films) with $11,299 in its second week for a total Canadian box office gross of $43,842; PAW Patrol: The Movie (produced by Paramount Pictures, Spin Master Entertainment and Nickelodeon Movies; distributed by Elevation Pictures) with $7,249 in its 38th week for a total gross $7,385,653; and Michael McGowan’s All My Puny Sorrows (produced by Carousel Pictures, Mulmur Feed Co., and Sugar Shack Productions; distributed by Mongrel Media) with $5,585 in its fourth week for a total gross of $77,060.
