APTN highlights ‘Ocean Warriors’ with new docuseries

Created, directed and produced by Steve Sxwithul’txw, the 13 x 30-minute series follows Canada's first Indigenous-led Coast Guard Auxiliary in B.C.

A PTN has greenlit a new docuseries from the producer of Tribal Police Files.

Ocean Warriors: Mission Ready is a 13 x 30-minute unscripted series created, directed and produced by Kwassen Productions’ Steve Sxwithul’txw. The series will air on APTN and B.C.-based channel CHEK later this year.

Production on Ocean Warriors: Mission Ready begins today (May 2) and runs until May 28, filming in the First Nations communities of Ahousaht, Quatsino, ‘Namgis, and Heiltsuk. The series follows the Coastal Nations Coast Guard Auxiliary, the first Indigenous-led Coast Guard Auxiliary in Canada, as they train for and respond to emergencies on the B.C. coastline.

Martin de Valk is a producer and director on the docuseries, Michele Mundy (‘Namgis Nation) is associate producer and production manager and Barbara Hager (Métis) is a writer.

Creator Sxwithul’txw said the series will showcase the “beauty of these territories and communities,” as well as the work of the volunteer search and rescue team,” in a statement.

Sxwithul’txw was the director and producer of three seasons of the APTN docuseries Tribal Police Files, following police work in First Nations communities across Canada.
