CRTC delays hearings

The CRTC has pushed back its planned talks on the group-based licensing of TV stations to November.

The hearings, originally set for Sept. 29, will instead get underway on Nov. 16, when the federal regulator says it will take a fresh look at issues including the ‘fair market value’ that cable and satellite providers will be required to pay conventional broadcasters for the use of their signals.

‘By proceeding this way, the Commission will ensure a fair, open and transparent hearing and remove any uncertainty on its outcome,’ said the CRTC in a statement this week.

The delay follows a legal challenge from Bell Canada, which has asked the Federal Court of Appeals to overturn the CRTC’s support for carriage fees on the grounds the regulator has overstepped its jurisdiction.
