Douglas Morris of Toronto’s Image Group describes the challenge of designing an animation show opening for a ‘one time’ event that delivers network production value – only five days after concept approval.

The Client: CTV Sports
The Project: 1994 World Curling Championships opener
Producer: John McLarty
The Production Team: Alan Kennedy, senior animator; Brian DeVille, animation designer; Doug Morris, producer
The Approach: The concept of receiving added value makes sense for consumers and television networks alike. With this in mind, the production/creative team developed an animated opening which could be reused for other international events.
With this approach, an animated opening for CTV Sports 1994 World Curling Championship, two non-specific ctv sports openings and one generic version was produced.
Using a Crimson Extreme workstation with Wavefront software allowed Alan Kennedy to create and animate quickly with the luxury of previewing film book animations, at a meaningful resolution, for the client. This ensured that we could deliver the final product with no unwelcome surprises, and the speed of the rendering enabled delivery on time and on budget.
