Bell drops case after CRTC blinks

Bell Canada has dropped its court case against the CRTC, now that the regulator says it will take a fresh look at fee-for-carriage this fall.

Last week the phone company turned to the Federal Court of Appeals, arguing that the CRTC had overstepped its jurisdiction by moving forward on the controversial fees before the public hearings, which were due to begin in September. Bell Canada owns Bell TV, one of the many satellite and cable companies that stand to start paying 50 cents per subscriber to conventional broadcasters if fee-for-carriage becomes a reality.

Earlier this week, the CRTC said the hearings have been pushed back to November — and that it would then take a fresh look at issues including the ‘fair market value’ of conventional signals. The case was therefore dropped, says a Bell TV spokesperson.
