Sort Of is getting a sophomore season.
CBC and HBO Max have renewed the Canadian dramedy series for a second season after the critically acclaimed season one made a splash on both sides of the border and landed a leading 13 Canadian Screen Award nominations, including Best Comedy Series.
The CBC original comedy is a co-production with HBO Max and Sienna Films, a Sphere Media company, and is created by Bilal Baig (Acha Bacha; pictured) and Fab Filippo (Save Me). The two also serve as showrunners and executive producers. Sienna Films’ Jennifer Kawaja is an executive producer on the series, which is produced with the participation of the Canada Media Fund.
Baig stars in the series as Sabi Mehboob, a gender-fluid millennial and youngest child in a large Pakistani family who works as a nanny and a bartender in Toronto. While feeling like they’re in transition in every aspect of their life, Sabi also becomes grounded in the family that hired them as a nanny, as they help the father work through a tragedy.
The coming-of-age story debuted on CBC Gem last October and on CBC TV and HBO Max in the U.S. in November. CBC tells Playback Daily it does not have a premiere date for season two yet.
“We are so thrilled that we are able to dive back into the worlds of Sort Of, and to keep exploring the evolution of all our characters (including some new ones!) as they continue to investigate who they are in the world as friends, family members, lovers and human beings,” said Baig, in a statement.
“Sort Of speaks to the complexity of being human in the world with wit, warmth and an authentic sense of inclusivity, thanks to the distinct voices of Bilal and Fab,” added Sally Catto, general manager of entertainment, factual and sports at CBC. “Sort Of has struck such a powerful chord with audiences, and we are thrilled to work with HBO Max and Sienna Films on the next chapter of Sabi’s story.”
