The Documentary Organization of Canada (DOC), in partnership with Canadian SVOD Tënk, is set to screen 11 DOC filmmaker projects that have not yet premiered online. The initiative called DOCs From the Vault will unfold in two series on the platform that’s dedicated to documentaries, with the first five released on Friday (Jan. 28) and the other six on March 25. The first selection of five films are: Stalking Love by Millefiore Clarkes; Inside Lara Roxx by Mia Donovan; Soop on Wheels by Sandy Greer; The Making of a Judge by Linda V. Carter; and Arctic Cliffhangers by Stephen A. Smith and Julia Szucs.
The second cohort launching March 25 includes: Arctic Mosque by Saira Rahman and Nilufer Rahman; Dah Dẕāhge Nodes̱idē (We are Speaking Our Language Again) by Michael Bourquin; This Stained Dawn by Anam Abbas; Still Here: A Journey to Triumph by Wanda Taylor; Burning Rubber by Ariella Pahlke; and Medicine Walker by Gregory Coyes. DOCs from the Vault was supported by the Canada Council for the Arts.
Gimli Film Festival gets a global rebrand
Manitoba’s Gimli Film Festival has been rebranded to the Gimli International Film Festival (GIFF). Organizers say the change reflects the global reach and broader scope of its virtual offerings over the pandemic and “signifies a new era” for the event, billed as “the largest film festival in Canada to be set in a rural community.”
Gimli is located on the shores of Lake Winnipeg, where the festival’s RBC Sunset Beach Screenings are held nightly on Gimli Beach. GIFF features local and international films, with a focus on contemporary cinema grounded in social justice, Indigenous narrative, environmental protection, equality and human rights. This year’s festival will take place from July 20 to 24.
