CBC’s upcoming comedy Sort Of will have its world premiere at France-based television festival Séries Mania.

The Sienna Films-produced series will compete in the International Panorama competition, which is selected by jury. Eligible prizes include best series, best actress and actor, as well as a best series prize from a student jury.  Séries Mania, which will take place in Lille, France, from Aug. 26 to Sept. 2, is one of the largest industry events in Europe dedicated to television series.

Sort Of is created by Bilal Baig and Fab Filippo (Save Me) and follows a genderfluid millennial in Toronto, in transition when it comes to all aspects of their life. The series will premiere on CBC Gem on Oct. 5 before airing on CBC on Nov. 9. Abacus Media Rights holds international sales rights.

Also in competition with Sort Of is Bête Noire (Dark Souls), directed by Sophie Deraspe (Antigone) which is produced by Encore Télévision and broadcast on Corus Entertainment’s French-language specialty channel Séries Plus. The series, which takes place in the wake of a school shooting in Quebec, will make its international premiere at Séries Mania after airing on Séries Plus earlier this year.

Two other CBC/Radio-Canada projects were selected for Séries Mania’s Short Forms competition. ICI TOU.TV series Félix, Maude et la fin du monde (Felix, Maude and the End of the World; Trio Orange), where a man and woman discover they may be the last humans on Earth following an eclipse, will make its European premiere; and CBC Gem series Something Undone (4 AM Films), which follows a foley artist who discovers a dark secret while settling her mother’s estate, will make its international premiere. Something Undone is one of the 119 projects to receive support from CBC’s Creative Relief Fund.
