It’s a Sin, Sort Of among BANFF 2021 Master Classes

The festival will host six Master Classes during its run from June 14 to July 16, including Transplant and David Makes Man, along with screenings of Global's drama Family Law and STARZ series Blindspotting.

The Banff World Media Festival (BANFF) has unveiled its 2021 Master Classes, including sessions with the talent and creatives behind CTV’s Transplant (Sphère Média) and CBC’s Sort Of (Sienna Films).

The festival, which runs June 14 to July 16, will host six Master Classes in total, including British series It’s a Sin (Red Production Company; pictured), created by Russell T. Davies, U.S. drama David Makes Man (Page Fright, Outlier Society Productions) created by Tarell Alvin McCraney, and Finnish/British animated series Moominvalley (Gutsy Animations), created by Marika Makaroff. BANFF previously announced FX comedy Reservation Dogs (FX Productions) as one of its Master Class series.

BANFF will also offer exclusive screenings of Global’s upcoming drama Family Law (SEVEN24 Film, Lark Productions), created by Susin Nielson and starring Jewel Staite and Victor Garber, and STARZ’s Blindspotting (Snoot Entertainment, Barnyard Projects), co-created and executive produced by Rafael Casal and Daveed Diggs (Snowpiercer).

“This year’s Master Classes and screenings represent some of the world’s most original, impactful and exciting series,” said Jenn Kuzmyk, executive director of BANFF in a statement. “It is a privilege to host such accomplished talent and executives as they take us through the business and creative story behind the making of each project.”

BANFF’s Sort Of Master Class will feature a discussion with co-creators and executive producers Bilal Baig and Fab Filippo and Sienna Films’ Jennifer Kawaja. Baig is the lead performer of the series and a writer, while Filippo is also a director. Sort Of – a dramedy about a gender-fluid Millennial at a transitional period in their life – was announced as part of the CBC’s 2021/22 fall lineup last week.

The It’s a Sin Master Class will feature Davies, alongside director Peter Hoar and actor Nathaniel Curtis; Transplant’s Master Class includes creator and showrunner Joseph Kay; Tara Woodbury, VP of development at Sphère Média; Carlyn Klebuc, GM, original programming at Bell Media; star Hamza Haq; and Ahmed Meree, a cultural consultant and actor.

The David Makes Man Master Class will include Alvin McCraney, OWN president Tina Perry, executive producer Dee Harris-Lawrence, director Kiel Adrian Scott, and actors Kwame Patterson and Akili McDowell; and Moominvalley‘s Master Class will feature Makaroff, executive producer Marion Edwards, director Jay Grace, YLE head of drama Jarmo Lampela and actor Jack Rowan.

BANFF also announced the some of the projects to be featured during the Rockie Awards Roundtables, including About Sex, I May Destroy You, Alone, Love on the Spectrum, Filthy Rich and Homeless, The Last Ice, Noughts + Crosses and El Presidente.
