Everest Entertainment’s release The Substitute opened in the number-one spot on Cineplex Odeon screens across Canada for the period April 19 to 21. Showing on 100 screens, the three-day box-office gross was $335,000, with a $725,000 estimated box office up to April 25.

The release is part of a deal Everest, with offices in Vancouver and Toronto, signed last November to distribute a minimum of 12 Orion Pictures feature films for a two year period. The Substitute is Everest’s second release for Orion, with its third to be Bruce McDonald’s Hard Core Logo, shot in Vancouver last fall.
