Openings: Disappointing B.O. for two Quebec films

Two Quebec features were released in theaters in May, Mario Bolduc’s L’Oreille d’un sourd and Pierre Gang’s Le Sous-sol.

Widely promoted on tv and by sponsor Brasserie Labatt, L’Oreille d’un sourd has earned $35,000 at the box office following a multiple-print release May 3.

Distributor Vivafilm had hoped for a better performance, but Pierre Brousseau, Vivafilm vp, says, ‘No Quebec films will work this year until the fall, including mine (L’Oreille)’.

Le Sous-sol, produced by Max Films, received good press notices at Cannes but had a limited box office of $14,600 after two weeks. It was released by Film Tonic in five Quebec cities May 31.

Alliance will launch the hit British film Trainspotting in Montreal and Toronto on July 26. Set among drug users in Glasgow, the film will be released in other Canadian keys the following week.

Billed as ‘the Clockwork Orange of the ’90s,’ Vivafilm in Montreal plans a launch rave, including a Brit band and dj concert, as part of its marketing campaign.
