David Cronenberg’s commercial and controversial Crash towed away the most statues at the 1996 Genies Awards with a total of five ­ including the Golden Reel Award for the top Canadian box office gross ­ but John Greyson’s Lilies, which had the most nominations at 14, took best picture. David Wellington’s Long Day’s Journey Into Night swept all the performance categories to round out the list of multiple winners.

Most surprising about this year’s winning roster is the small range of films represented. Of 20 nominated features, Crash, Lilies and Long Day’s Journey Into Night captured 10 awards among them, leaving only four other films on the winning list: John L’Ecuyer’s Curtis’s Charm (for original score), Bruce McDonald’s Hard Core Logo (for original song), Pierre Gang’s Sous-sol (for original screenplay), and Peter Wellington’s J’e’s So Mean To Josephine (the Claude Jutra Award for first features).

Films most noticeably absent from the winner’s circle were multiple nominees like Robert Lepage’s Le Polygraphe, which had nine, and Anna Benson Gyles’ Swann and John Fawcett’s The Boys Club, both of which had five.
