Canadian TV once again makes the cut in the GLAAD Media awards as Schitt’s Creek and Wynonna Earp earn nominations for comedy and drama, respectively.
CBC comedy Schitt’s Creek (pictured) earned its third nomination for Outstanding Comedy Series, which it won in 2020. The series, produced by Dan and Eugene Levy’s Not a Real Company Productions, is up against a number of new series, including Freeform’s Everything’s Gonna Be Okay, HBO Max’s Harley Quinn, Hulu’s Love, Victor, Peacock’s Saved by the Bell and BET’s Twenties (BET), as well as Netflix shows Big Mouth, Dead to Me and Sex Education, and NBC’s Superstore.
CTV Sci-Fi Channel series Wynonna Earp earned its fourth nomination in Outstanding Drama Series. The series, produced by SEVEN24 Films in association with Crave and Cineflix Studios, is up against Canadian-shot series such as Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy and CBS All Access’ Star Trek: Discovery, which are filmed in Toronto, and The CW’s Supergirl, shot in Vancouver. Other nominees include Starz shows Vida and P-Valley, Netflix’s Ratched, Amazon’s The Wilds, BBC America’s Killing Eve and FOX’s 9-1-1: Lone Star.
Another notable nomination is The Christmas Setup in the Outstanding TV Movie category. The Lifetime film was shot in the Ottawa region and was produced by Neshama in association with MarVista.
Overall, streaming services dominated the nominations for the 32nd annual GLAAD Media Awards. Streamers earned a total of 58 nods, while cable received 29 and broadcaster networks picked up 14. Of the streamers, Netflix earned the most nods with 26, followed by HBO Max with nine.
