Insight Productions has partnered with the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation (NCTR) on a 90-minute special to honour residential school survivors and their families.

Every Child Matters: Reconciliation Through Education is created and produced by NCTR in collaboration with Insight and in association with APTN and CBC with support from Canadian Heritage. The special will air on CBC and CBC Gem this Sunday (Oct. 11). Broadcast details for APTN will be announced soon.

The special was written by NCTR director Ry Moran, Stephanie Scott and Insight’s Lindsay Cox, who all serve as executive producers alongside Insight chairman and CEO John Brunton.

It features stories and performances from a diverse group of Indigenous nations, communities and cultures, ranging from youth and leaders to knowledge keepers and elders to honour those impacted by Canada’s residential schools. An estimated 150,000 First Nations, Inuit and Métis children were forced into residential schools, according to the Union of Ontario Indians. Residential schools first opened in Canada in the 1870s, with the last school closing in 1996.

Every Child Matters: Reconciliation Through Education has already been screened to more than 500,000 students across Canada as part of Orange Shirt Day on Sept. 30, which started in 2013 as a way to honour and remember Indigenous children and families impacted by Canada’s residential schools.

“We have put together an impactful and meaningful program featuring residential school survivors, elders, knowledge keepers, artists and leaders from nations and cultures across the country,” said Moran, in a statement. “First Nations, Inuit and Métis storytelling comes together in a program that engages young people in a conversation about our country’s history and the path of truth and reconciliation that lays ahead.”
