Toronto International Film Festival 1997 Daily Playback: Screen Surveillance

This column highlights titles that are attracting buyer interest.

*Mr. Jealousy

Kicking and Screaming director Noah Baumbach returns with his second feature, a twisted, comedic treatise on the powers of jealousy.

Eric Stolz (who also acts as exec producer) stars as Lester, a lad lost in the woods who finally settles into a good relationship with Ramona Ray (Annabella Sciorra) – until he meets her old boyfriend and becomes obsessed with her past and deranged by his own jealousy. The film also stars Marianne Jean-Baptiste (Secrets and Lies) and includes appearances from Peter Bogdanovich and John Lehr, among others.

Kathy Morgan International holds world rights.

*The House of Yes

One local critic pointed out incest and comedy are not a likely duo and yet Mark Waters has endeavored to make a dark comedy about a seriously dysfunctional American family that has far too many closets to open in a mere 90 minutes. This first feature, which will receive its premier public screenings this weekend, brings together an ensemble cast that includes Parker Posey, Tori Spelling, Genevieve Bujold, Freddie Prinze Jr. and Josh Hamilton. Waters wrote the screenplay based on the play by Wendy MacLeod.

Alliance Releasing holds domestic rights and Spelling Films handles all other rights world-wide.

*Marcello Mastroianni, I Remember, Yes, I Remember

A dearth of Italian films at the festival is not a reflection of the industry in il bel paese; one plugged-in buyer says Italians are making movies that do well at home these days, but they’re films that don’t travel.

Here, Mastroianni’s long-time companion and experienced filmmaker, Anna Maria Tato, takes on a subject undoubtedly of international interest. The personal documentary, shot during the making of his last film (Manuel de Oliveira’s Journey to the Beginning of the World, also at tiff) is reported to be a moving tribute to the great actor.

Mikado Films is selling the film, and all rights except Belgium, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy and Spain are available.

*Gerrie and Louise

Filmmaker Sturla Gunnarsson returns to the documentary form after a 10-year absence (during which time he made dramas such as The Diary of Evelyn Lau.) Here, he turns his camera on a couple – Gerrie and Louise – who are at the centre of South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission and whose political backgrounds are diametrically opposed. Originally made for cbc television, this powerful film was transferred to film for its tiff screenings and is being handled by Films Transit. All rights except English Canada, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Iceland and Switzerland are available. The film receives its final screening today.
