Schitt’s Creek’s favourite season – awards – is upon us, as the CBC comedy takes one step closer to Emmy gold.
The series’ final season won big in the Television Critics Association’s annual awards, taking Outstanding Achievement In Comedy and Individual Achievement In Comedy for Catherine O’Hara, one of the few gender neutral acting categories during awards season. The wins made U.S. broadcaster Pop TV the second most-awarded network overall.
Schitt’s Creek beat out Better Things, Dead to Me, The Good Place, Insecure and What We Do in the Shadows for the TCA win. Four of the five series will compete with Schitt’s Creek for the best comedy award at the upcoming 72nd annual Emmy Awards, set to take place in a virtual ceremony on Sunday (Sept. 20). Also in contention is Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Kominsky Method and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which won the prize in 2018.
Schitt’s Creek earned a total of 15 Emmy nominations, with O’Hara, co-creators and executive producers Dan and Eugene Levy, and Annie Murphy all up for acting nominations.
CBC Kids and PBS Kids animated series Molly of Denali, coproduced by Thunderbird Entertainment’s Atomic Cartoons and WGBH Boston, was also honoured with Outstanding Achievement in Youth Programming. The series won a Peabody award in the Children’s and Youth category earlier this year.
Canadian and famed Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek was also honoured with the TCA’s career achievement award. Trebek was awarded a Lifetime Achievement award from the Canadian Academy this year. It was announced in 2019 that Trebek was diagnosed with stage four pancreatic cancer.
The TCA awards ceremony itself was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with winners announced via press release, but Thunderbird released a statement to acknowledge the award. “Molly is an authentic voice, and the series has become renowned for its representation and inclusion,” said CEO Jennifer Twiner McCarron. “To be acknowledged by the TCA, an organization that has been helping curate the best content on television for decades, is a tremendous honour and a testament to the incredible talent and dedicated partnerships behind this production.”
