Toronto writer Mitch Moldofsky will be presenting a reading of his screenplay, a romantic comedy titled Going For Broke, at the Free Times Cafe in Toronto in what he hopes will become a regular series titled Off The Page.
Fashioned on the Fifth Night screenplay series at the Nuyorcian Poets Cafe in New York City, Moldofsky says the readings are intended to showcase completed scripts to independent film producers in front of an audience, read in the way the author intended.
‘Even experienced script readers can have difficulty making the leap from the printed page to envisioning how the final product will play to an audience,’ says Moldofsky. ‘Do the jokes work? Do the feelings resonate? Is the suspense compelling? A film reading takes the eyes off the page and lets the mind imagine more freely.’
A reading complete with actors for Going For Broke, which tells the story of an artist and her relationship with a street kid she hires as a model, will take place Dec. 14 at the Free Times Cafe on College Street. Muldofsky says if the evening is a success he will be producing the Off the Page series on a monthly basis.
