Odeon films do boffo B.O.

Two homegrown Canadian films that opened in November are delivering boffo box-office numbers for producer Rhombus Media and distributor Odeon Films.

The Red Violin has broken the $2-million mark with a total Canadian box office gross of $2,020,773 ($1,318,836 for Odeon’s English-language release and $701,937 for the French-language version distributed by Film Tonic) as of Jan. 31.

Odeon opened Red Violin in 65 cities across Canada including Whitehorse in the Yukon. The Italy/Canada coproduction, directed by Francois Girard and produced by Niv Fichman, captured eight Genies with its tale of a red violin’s journey across continents and centuries until brought to auction in present-day Montreal.

Meanwhile, director Don McKellar’s Last Night – a modest take on the end of the world – has taken in a strong box-office gross of $367,375. Odeon opened the Rhombus production in 40 cities, once again including Whitehorse. Last Night took home three Genies.
