Not content to bask in the current box-office success of its production Such A Long Journey, The Film Works has an even more ambitious project slated as its next feature.

Film Works will produce the $8-million feature Julie Walking Home in Toronto this August with Polish director Agnieshka Holland (Europa Europa, Washington Square, The Third Miracle) at the helm.

Written by Holland and Canadian Arlene Sarner (Peggy Sue Got Married), the film will be a Canada/Poland coproduction with Tor Production, a leading Polish production company. Most of the filming will take place in Toronto, with some shooting in Poland and Russia.

u.s.-based distributor Sony Pictures Classics has made an up-front investment in the film and has made offers for u.s. rights and against certain foreign territories, says Film Works cochairman Victor Solnicki.

Equinox (Compagnie France Film) has taken Canadian rights. tv rights to Julie Walking Home have been presold to TMN-The Movie Network, Superchannel and Super Ecran and to Polish conventional and cable television.

‘Agnieshka can really get cast,’ says Solnicki. ‘She’s got a great track record.’

Solnicki and Film Works’ Paul Stephens will produce.

The film has applied to Telefilm Canada’s feature film coproduction envelope.

l.a.’s Creative Artists Agency is handling the casting and a major female star is being sought for the lead role.
