CSC Fetes its best

The Canadian Society of Cinematographers held its annual awards celebration Saturday, March 27 at Toronto’s Sheraton Centre Hotel. The event, which recognizes excellence by directors of photography in a variety of categories, was hosted by tv producer and broadcaster Ann Medina, of CBC Newsworld and History Television.

Following are this year’s winners:

Best theatrical feature cinematography: Derek Rogers, Cube (Canadian Feature Film Project)

Best tv drama cinematography: Paul Sarossy csc, Rocky Marciano (MGM Television)

Best tv series cinematography: Miroslaw Baszak, The Rescuers ‘Malka’ (Paramount)

Best documentary cinematography: Joan Hutton csc, Hitman Hart: Wrestling With Shadows (High Road Productions)

Best dramatic short cinematography: Barry Parrell csc, Blind Man’s Bluff (Cosmic Flicks)

Stan Clinton Award (for news essay cinematography): Wendell Tenove, Weibo’s War (ctv)

Roy Tash Award (for spot news cinematography): Bill Purchase, ‘Police Abuse’ (ctv)

Fritz Spiess Award (for best commercial cinematography): Andre Pienaar csc, cibc ‘Literacy’ (The Partners’ Film Company)

Best music video cinematography: Dylan MacLeod, Bootsy Collins: Do the Freak (Hoodoo Films)

Best industrial cinematography: Matthew R. Phillips, The Wave (Acme Pictures)

Student cinematography award: Christian Moreton, Strange Fruit (Ryerson Polytechnic University)

Camera assistant award of merit: Colleen Norcross

Special awards

Bert Dunk csc-asc is this year’s recipient of the Kodak New Century Award for outstanding contribution to the art of cinema.

Robert Rouveroy csc was presented with the Fuji Award for outstanding service to the csc.

And the Bill Hilson Award for outstanding service contributing to the development of the motion picture industry in Canada went to Maria Topalovich, president of the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television.
