Ahead of its season three finale this August, U.S. SVOD Hulu has renewed The Handmaid’s Tale for a fourth season.

Produced by MGM Television, the Toronto-shot dystopian series is based on Margaret Atwood’s 1985 novel of the same name. The Handmaid’s Tale takes place in a totalitarian society where women are treated as property of the state. It centres on Offred (played by Elisabeth Moss) who is a Handmaid, a caste of women forced into sexual servitude to repopulate the world.

Last year, the streamer greenlit the show for third season a couple of episodes into its second. Season three follows the struggle to fight back against the dystopian regime. The Handmaid’s Tale streams on Bell Media-owned Crave and airs on Bravo in Canada.

Cinespace VP Jim Mirkopoulos confirmed to Playback Daily that the series will shoot its upcoming season at Cinespace’s Kipling Studio, where it previously shot its past three seasons. Additionally, Take 5 Productions’ John Weber confirmed he and Whizbang Films’ Frank Siracusa will produce the show’s fourth season.

Executive producers on The Handmaid’s Tale include Weber, Siracusa, Moss, creator Bruce Miller, Warren Littlefield, Daniel Wilson, Fran Sears, Ilene Chaiken, Eric Tuchman and Sheila Hockin.

Earlier this month, a number of Canadians were nominated for their work in the Emmy Awards craft and design categories. Production designer Elisabeth Williams and art director Martha Sparrow were nominated for Outstanding Production Design for a Narrative Contemporary Program for their work on the show. And picture editor Wendy Hallam-Martin received a nomination for the episode “The Word” in the Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing for a Drama Series category.
