Gemini send-off for comedies

The Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television plans a comedy trifecta Saturday night when it will give Corner Gas, Royal Canadian Air Farce and Trailer Park Boys primetime salutes during the 24th Gemini Awards telecast.

The industry kudosfest wants to honor all three homegrown comedies after their final seasons with a showcase of funny clips and cast members on stage in Calgary.

‘It’s a way of knowing you’re really done when they give you a tribute,’ said Air Farce veteran Don Ferguson, with a comic’s typical gallows humor after 16 seasons with the CBC sketch comedy series.

Ferguson added personal delight in Air Farce being honored alongside Corner Gas, ‘the most successful’ Canadian sitcom ever, and Trailer Park Boys‘ Ricky, Julian and Bubbles, who proved ‘three wankers from Nova Scotia can have a good time and stay out of jail.’

That could change, however, after Bubbles and Julian — reached in Halifax, and in character — said they won’t forget to pack a beer cooler for Calgary.

‘I’m going to make sure I keep a good pace to not look like an idiot on stage. We’ll be sure to be liquored up on the night,’ said John Paul Tremblay, who plays Julian

Mike Smith, as Bubbles, added he wasn’t entirely sure why they were Calgary-bound.

‘I think it’s bizarre, to fly us out there. Maybe it’s a trick. Maybe we’ll be on an episode of Punk’d,’ he ventured.

Both added that Ricky, played by Robb Wells, has been told they’ll be attending a Calgary Flames game Saturday night — otherwise he won’t fly west.

Academy CEO Sara Morton said the Geminis will also pay tribute to the homegrown shows for tickling the Canadian funny bone as they pushed the comedic envelope.

Global Television and Showcase will be hoping for more yuks with the addition of Brandon Firla and Zaib Shaikh from Little Mosque on the Prairie and Gabrielle Miller from Corner Gas as on-screen presenters.

They join previously announced comics bound for Calgary including Rick Mercer, Mark McKinney and Geminis host Ron James. Also booked into Calgary as presenters is Arlene Dickinson and W. Brett Wilson from Dragons’ Den and Alex Lifeson of Rush.
