Sony to redo De père

Sony Pictures plans to make an English-language version of De père en flic, giving the Quebec box-office smash the Hollywood treatment via the producing team of Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull).

Denise Robert and Émile Gaudreault — producer and writer/director of the original comedy — will also work on the development of the redo.

The picture has raked in close to $11 million since its release this summer through Alliance Vivafilm, making it the highest-grossing French-language film of all time in Canada.

Its success led to Robert’s recent crowning as Playback‘s Producer of the Year. Further, the picture was recently screened for politicians in Ottawa.

The Hollywood version is tentatively titled Fathers and Guns. The story follows a father-and-son cop duo who are forced to work together on a case.

De père en flic is a fantastically funny film,’ said Kennedy in a statement. ‘We greatly admire the work that went into the movie… We just hope that we can make the English-language adaptation as entertaining and successful.’
