Montreal: much-admired documentary filmmaker Yvan Patry died suddenly Oct. 14. Patry and partner Daniele Lacourse won awards in Canada and around the world for films such as Chronique d’un genocide annonce (Rwanda series), and Nicaragua, la guerre sale. The filmmakers (Alter-Cine) were completing shooting on a new doc on the Chiapas of Mexico.
In their October newsletter, Patry’s colleagues in the Canadian Independent Film Caucus write that the filmmaker worked ‘without fear of danger for himself, directed and produced works that denounced injustice everywhere.’
Patry’s work, largely coproduced with the National Film Board, was celebrated at a rally at Maison de la Realisation on Oct. 26.
