You could say that for Global tv this fall it will be more of the same, but perhaps less so, on the kids and teen programming front.
When the crtc issued its new tv policy last summer, observers wondered not only how broadcasters would fulfill the new requirement for eight hours of priority programming in primetime, but also whether broadcasters would cut back on kids fare. Of course, go-ahead decisions on fall skeds also depend a fair bit on forthcoming decisions on funding from the Canadian Television Fund.
But Global’s national program director, Howard Slutsken, says the morning sked will once again feature lots of kids shows; vp Canadian production Loren Mawhinney says the only difference may be that Global is looking for programming that’s less expensive to produce.
For tweens after-school next season, Mawhinney says 20 half-hours of The Mystery Files of Shelby Woo are on order. Returning titles include Sabrina and The New Addams Family.
New for kids for 2000-01 is Prairie Berry Pie, a half-hour live-action puppet series from Minds Eye Productions.
Popular Mechanics for Kids, from Productions sda is also due back. The exact number of episodes is unclear, but the order won’t likely be close to the 22 of last year. Slutsken says Global will be reviewing new episodes of Babar from Nelvana, and running episodes from the first five seasons of the gentlemanly elephant’s adventures. He says Telescene’s Student Bodies should also be back.
