Canadians up for Emmys

The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has announced the nominees for the 1999/00 Daytime Emmy Awards, airing May 19, which include a handful of Canadian talent and properties, especially in the children’s programming categories.

Temple Street Productions leads the pack with nine nominations including: best children’s special for Sea People and Summer’s End; directing in a children’s special (Vic Sarin for Sea People, Helen Shaver for Summer’s End), performer in a children’s special (Hume Cronyn for Sea People, James Earl Jones for Summer’s End); and writing in a children’s special (Wendy Biller and Chris Hawthorne for Sea People, Grant Scharbo and Jim Thompson for Summer’s End).

Dead Aviators, a coprod with Accent Entertainment (nominated under the u.s. title Restless Spirits) was also nominated in the writing in a children’s special category (Semi Chellas).

Cinar picked up three nominations including two for Arthur: best children’s animated program and sound mixing – special class (Benoit Coallier). Zoboomafoo is in the running for direction in a children’s series (Jesse Collins).

Matching Cinar, Nelvana also came out strong with three nominations: Maurice Sendak’s Little Bear in the children’s animated program category; George and Martha for performance in an animated program (Nathan Lane); and William Joyce’s Rolie Polie Olie (a coprod with Disney) for special class – animated program.

Also nominated for special class – animated program is Decode Entertainment’s Angela Anaconda.

Nominated for direction of a children’s special are Clement Virgo for The Film Works’ The Planet of Junior Brown and Richard Mozer for Devine Entertainment’s The Artists Specials: Mary Cassatt: American Impressionist, which is also nominated for single camera editing (Rik Morden).
